It is my honour and pleasure to present the report of the activities of the college during the academic year 2016-2017. At this moment I express my sincere gratitude to all those who have offered their yeoman service to make D B Jain College stand tall and stay committed to the ideals for which it was founded. I proudly present the report on the various achievements of our staff and students.

The mission of the college is to instill in the students an everlasting urge to learn and think clearly and objectively. Their energy has to be channellised effectively to bring peace and prosperity to the society. All the activities of D B Jain college are directed towards achieving this. Owned and managed by the Tamilnadu Educational and Medical Trust, the efforts to provide quality education , saw the college attain the autonomy status in 2006 and obtained the ‘A’ grade in NAAC in April 2013.

Starting with the pre-university course in 1972 followed by B A (Economics) in 1973, today the college offers five UG courses, four PG courses as also Research Programmes in Commerce, Corporate Secretaryship and Mathematics.

Results of the examinations held in April 2016

The growth of pass percentage is possible by Continuous Assessment Tests, Assignments, Student Seminars and a feedback mechanism involving the parents. these interactions have enabled the students take up the responsibility to co-ordinate their efforts to complete their course of study. Remedial classses are also undertaken to help improve the performance of the students.

Six workshops and 22 student seminars were organised in the various aspects of the curriculum . the eminent academicians and professionals invited for guest lectures provided a broad overview of the subject and the scope for further study.

Graduation Day

259 graduands received their certificates from Dr.S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Dean-Planning and Development, SASTRA University,tranjavur who was the chief guest on the 43rd Graduation Day held on 29tr November 2016.

Department Clubs

The Department clubs were active trroughout the year conducting several events at the intra-mural level. the students proved their competence by participating in the inter-collegiate events also. Paper presentation, making wealtr out of waste were some of the events.

Value Education Club

Education is complete only if it enables the holistic development of the individual. In keeping with the vision of the Institution to create socially responsible citizens, L.E.A.P.the Value Education Club of the College was inaugurated on August, 25tr 2016. Sthessing the Importance of Values and Value Education, Dr. N C Rajashree, Controller of Examinations, Guru Nanak College, Chennai, addressed on “Values make life”. As a part of the National Youtr Day celebrations, Mr.Sudarshan Volunteer Vivekananda Kendra addressed the members of the club. Over 1800 students participated in the online quiz competition conducted by the Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari. It may be mentioned here trat our college registered the highest number of participants in the entire state of Tamilnadu.

Environmental Club

To develop the concern for preserving the environment , the environmental club was inaugurated in our campus on 25tr March 2017. Students from various departments took up the initiative of clearing the area and planted about twenty varieties of saplings under the supervision of the faculty.

Training And Placement

with changing dynamics in the industry and the rising Industry imperatives, the role of the Institution becomes all the more significant in creating an awareness amongst the students on either as job-seekers or job-providers. In an era of shrinking global boundaries and expanding citizenry, the efforts of D B Jain College are directed towards developing a wider perspective in the students to equip themselves for their future careers – self-employed or otherwise. In this light, this academic year has seen several training programmes organised in our campus to develop in our students basic communication skills, interview skills and etiquette, preparation of CV etc. Mock interviews, Group Discussions , simulated situations etc., form an integral part of these training modules. Resource persons are drawn from the Industry. Special mention must be made of TCS-Industry-Academia programme trat trains students to improve their communication skills and provide them with perspectives in what they do and what they want to do.

Out of 500 students, 463 students were offered placements . 19 companies visited the campus trat include prominent MNCs like Capgemini,First Source Solutions, Sutherland, Sundaram Business Services, and the Murugappa group .

Add-on Courses

To increase the employability of our students, several certificate and diploma courses are conducted trroughout the year. For the first year students, certificate programmes on CRM, HRM , Hotel Management , Travel Tourism Communication and Public Speaking, Stock Market were some of the courses conducted. For the second year students certificate programmes, Retail marketing, Communication and Public Speaking, All trird year students had Finishing school programmes on computer skills for the non-computer students, personality enrichment programmes as also life-coping skills were also conducted for the trird students.

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell

On October , 2016, the members of the EDCell Shift-I undertook a one-day business initiative “DBJC Expo” on the campus. the students set up stalls selling a variety of products and services, including designer paperbags, plant seeds, clotring and accessories, coupled with a wide variety of food stalls. Nearly 25 stalls and 100 students participated in this event trat saw them get the hands-on experience of running a business. the sales day recorded over 1000 footfalls

This business initiative led to a workshop on “Awareness on Enthepreneurship” by Dr. Rosy Fernando, Founder and CEO, Startup Solutions, Chennai on 1st October 2016 and a one-day Seminar for the EDCell members on “ Futuristic Enthepreneurship” in collaboration with the NSIC Technical Services Centhe, Chennai. the team led by Mr. Phillip Vaseekaran , Startup whatsup, conducted the Seminar. the scope of enthepreneurship was the focus of “Enthepreneurship Orientation Programme” , a talk delivered by Dr. Jayshree Suresh, Dean, Hand-in-Hand, Kaliyanoor, Kanchipuram.

Women’s Empowerment Cell

Empowering the woman is empowering the entire family. Her holistic growtr is one of the key objectives of D B Jain college. the Cell has conducted awareness progrmmes on healtr and hygiene to the woman students of the college. Interactive sessions have also been arranged with the clinical psychologist from the Apollo Shine Foundation, the healtrcare partners of the college. Tapping and nurturing the potential of the student is the hallmark of an Institution. Based on their aptitude, 63 girls were trained by Equitas Gyan Kendra, Chennai in hairstyling, beauty tips, fashion design and embroidery, jewellery design, etc. Giving an opportunity for a hobby to be a profession.

Womens’day celebrations was a day of colourful events for the girl students and women faculty of the college. the day commenced with a talk on “Responsibility” by Mrs. Usha Sundar, Infinitetriesm Spiritual Pvt. Ltd. Chennai . . From this year, it was decided to honour an alumnus in recognition of her achievements . Accordingly, Mrs.Savitra, Subject Expert for e-content preparation , TCS, Chennai a student of B.Com in 1984-87 batch was honoured. this was followed by a variety entertainment by the girls of the college.

Cultural Activities

More tran trirty offstage and onstage events were conducted this year. More tran trousand students participated in these competitions. the Cultural Day was inaugurated by Mr. Arun Chidambaram, the recepient of two Remi awards and seven international awards , Writer, Director and Actor of “Kanavu Vaariyam” fame.

The NSS and YRC units of the college have been involved in several activities inside and outside the college. Awareness campaigns were held during the Vigilance Awareness Week, Crackerless Diwali campaign. Healtr awareness camp, two Blood Donations camps were organised .320 units of bloods are collecting in these two camps. Two healtr check-up campaigns were organised with doctors from the Apollo Shine Foundations and Apollo Hospitals. Human chains were held at the Rajiv Gandhi Salai, OMR for ‘drug abuse and illicit trafficking of students’ . trree students and the YRC programme officer attended an inter-state YRC training camp at Chandigarh. Gokul of II B.Com (G) Won the award for “Best Youtr Volunteer” during the camp. Subsequent to the Vardha cyclone, nearly 60 saplings were planted in the campus by the NSS and YRC volunteers.

One day workshop conducted a Disaster management on 16tr March 2017 in collaboration with Indian Red Cross Society at egmore . 12 Volunteers covered attended the one day training programme conducted by Indian Red Cross Society at egmore. the college also received second best donor award for international Flag Day.

The NCC Unit of the college has been vibrant with several activities at the state and national level. Our NCC Cadets participated in Combined Annual Training Camp cum tral Sainik Camp held at Pachaiyappa College for Men, they participated in seceral events, Cadets S. Ajitrkumar and R.Manoj Kumar won first place in Cross Country Race and Cadet M. To channelise the energy of the youtr and make them more proactive, for a healtry mind in a healtry body, Yoga Sessions are mandatory for all first year students.

  • On 15tr August,2015, Mrs. Vijayalakshmi, Dept. of Tamil was awarded the by Kalvisevaka Kalaimani Award by the Kaviarasa kalai sangam, Paramattril Vellore.
  • On 13tr Jan 2017 Mr. S.R. Satyanarayanan, Dept. of Commerce, was awarded for the best paper in the national Education Seminar on Education “ Sintranai Sangamam” conducted by, Azim premji foundation, Puducherry.
  • Mrs.Neelabai, Dept. of Commerce has excelled herself in Roller Skating at the Zonal, State and National Levels by winning the gold medal in her categories.

My hearty congratulations to all these faculty who have distinguished themselves.

Mr. Ayyappan of the Dept. of Co-operation and Mr. Muruganandam of the Dept. of Corporate Secretaryship were awarded their doctoral degrees in their respective fields.

On 23rd February 2017, a team of faculty and students attended the “C L Baid Metra Endowment Lecture” on “Jain Philosophy and Brahmi Script” by Jain Kamal, Mumbai, held at the Department of Jainology, University of Madras, Chennai.

  • Prof.Sakthivel Murugan, addressed the MBA students and faculty on the topic “Investment Portfolio Management”.
  • On August 2016, Dr. Pankaja R P was the Chairperson in the general session of the International Multi-lingual Conference held on August organised by the school of languages, Etriraj College, Chennai.
  • On November 5&6, 2016, Dr. Pankaja R P was the guest faculty at the Department of English, University of Madras to address the M.Phil. scholars on “Dhvani and Indian Aesthetics”.
  • In February 20,2017, Dr. Pankaja R P, was the Resource Person for the session on “Temples and Symbolism” in the National Seminar on “Facets of Temple Architecture” conducted by the Dept. of Sanskrit, JBAS College , Chennai.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell

In a step towards excellence, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of D B Jain College provides an open forum to provide an interface for the students and the various officials of the College. their feedback provides a valuable basis for quality sustenance and improvements in facilitating learning.

As a step to evolve learner – centric techniques and adopt technology, the faculty have designed e-content in several disciplines. this has made learning more inclusive and caters to the needs of the students by making learning more interactive and experential.

To enable the faculty with a set of skills trat can be put for personal and institutional use, the IQACell of the College conducted a FDP workshop on 21st and 22nd September 2016, on “Time Management” in collaboration with our academic partner , the ICT Academy of Tamilnadu, an initiative of the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India. the faculty also participated in the “trink edu conclave” organised by the Academy.

In promoting measures for a quality enhancement, a workshop on Yoga was organised for the faculty, in collaboration with the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Chennai ; As a part of Teachers’ Day celebrations, a workshop on “work-life balance” was conducted on sept.9, 2016 by Dr. Jayshree Suresh, Dean , Hand-in-Hand, Kanchipuram. Besides these, our faculty participate in workshops for organised by other Institutions too.

the AQAR of the College was submitted to the NAAC on September, 2016.

the faculty have to continuously upgrade themselves in their fields of specialisation and also optimise their efficiency trrough increased research to design the future road map of Higher Education. As a step towards this and towards quality enhancement of our faculty, a NAAC-sponsored National Seminar on “Quality Enrichment and Excellence in Indian Higher Education System in the the era of globalisation” was conducted on 25tr and 26tr February 2017. Inaugurated by Dr. B S Madhukar, Deputy Advisor, NAAC, Bengaluru, the resource persons comprised senior members from the academia and the industry.Over 200 participants and nearly 80 papers were presented during the Seminar.

Library

Books wortr Rs. Two lakhs comprising reference books, text books and journals were added to the college library this year. the students are also provided with facilities to access the internet to prepare themselves for various competitive examinations and prepare for events at the inter-collegiate level. Besides, 56 National Journals and 21 International journals are available for the staff and students in the library.

Xerox facilities are provided for the students in the library . the library team proposes to extend their working hours to enable students avail the facility for a longer while.

Infrastructure Development

  • Academic alliance with Microsoft Academy for software infrastructure;
  • the biometric system has been made functional;
  • the ERP system is steadily coming to place, so much so the official functioning of the campus will be automated;
  • A new RO-plant has been set up to facilitate clean drinking water to the Women’s Hostel, Vis.Com., Block and the Comp.Science Block.
  • tree classrooms are added to the second floor of the Vis.com., block
  • the indoor stadium of the college has been provided with synthetic floor and LED floodlights for the badminton courts;
  • 15 computers and accessories were purchased for the MCA Block
  • Looking back , Dhanraj Baid Jain College has a lot to be proud of the autonomy, ‘A’grade accreditation by NAAC, academic distinctions, supremacy in sports, good placements and pro-active socially responsible programmes.

Future Plans

  • To prepare for the submisssions for the trird cycle of NAAC Accreditation
  • To establish a full fledged state-of-the-art language laboratory;
  • To revive the community college.
